And then of course Olivia de Havilland's stellar performance.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-71350961463000698882014-06-28T16:44:07.289+03:002014-06-28T16:44:07.289+03:00I actually saw this film as a teenager on TV many,...I actually saw this film as a teenager on TV many, many years ago. I liked it then and am glad to see that it didn't seem overly dated when I saw it recently. I was going to go back and read the original book by Mary Jane Ward, but it just got put on my "things to do at a later date" list.1001: A Film Odyssey is produced, directed and written by Chris, a librarian.https://www.blogger.com/profile/04803620768028761898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-26867037478403619462014-06-25T21:15:00.746+03:002014-06-25T21:15:00.746+03:00Well, this is exactly why we do this thing, no?

It's also one of the films that made me happy I did the List because I'd have never watched it otherwise, and it's a film I'm still happy I saw.

Chip is right about The Heiress, too. The central story of Virginia's cure has not aged well, but the story about the psychiatric ward is good and heartbreaking.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-16956226134160016992014-06-25T09:52:56.954+03:002014-06-25T09:52:56.954+03:00Indeed. You do not know how to deal with these people and then it is easier to hide them away.
I heard good things about the Heiress, so that is one I am definitely looking forward to.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-12921607111715356832014-06-25T09:21:36.094+03:002014-06-25T09:21:36.094+03:00TS, I was pretty shocked by de Havilland's per...TS, I was pretty shocked by de Havilland's performance in this. She, as you mention, does a wonderful job of portraying her character's instability and frustrations. However, I'm not as big of fan of the overall movie as I would like.Kimberly J.M. This is the first of de Havilland...Good review. This is the first of de Havilland's great one-two punch of films at the end of the 1940s. You've still got The Heiress ahead of you.

For the time The Snake Pit was still quite startling. Mental illness in the family was shameful to most people and they just wanted to ignore it. Send the crazy person away and try not to think about them, let alone how they are being treated. As you noted, this film did manage to get people talking about the terrible conditions often found in these places. It's a long way ahead of you on the list, but the 2003 Italian TV miniseries The Best of Youth did something similar.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com
