It turns out that the some-dude-got-stranded-on-a-deserted-island theme is an entire genre in it own right.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-58747030250391543492014-01-13T20:03:53.032+02:002014-01-13T20:03:53.032+02:00Ha ha! I love it - a word for Robinson Crusoe-esque stories. That's awesome.

I definitely find the "after the war" stories more compelling than war stories on their own. siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-68856897258174840312014-01-13T09:03:14.539+02:002014-01-13T09:03:14.539+02:00Yes, this is as real as it gets in 1946. Modern editing would like have cut about an hour and it would not have been the same film.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-11465430510996976882014-01-13T09:00:43.244+02:002014-01-13T09:00:43.244+02:00I think that whether a war is considered a "g...I think that whether a war is considered a "good war" or a "bad war" matters not when it comes to the issue of returning soldiers. They are returning to a world that has not shared their experience and they have changed. That is that and i think it is universal.
You may actually notice that even in this film some asshole is talking about that they were fighting the wrong war. A nod to McCarthy'ism. I take it as another hint that people at home have no clue what is going on in the field.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-56660325714677920622014-01-13T03:21:20.295+02:002014-01-13T03:21:20.295+02:00I agree with you about the ending. It was never going to be real-reality in 1946, but this comes as close to reality as I think Hollywood could allow itself.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-14156305687980943102014-01-13T02:09:55.318+02:002014-01-13T02:09:55.318+02:00What really impressed me was that WWII is seen as ...What really impressed me was that WWII is seen as "the last great war" in my country - the last time the soldiers were heroes and that the enemy was clearly evil. Korea and Vietnam followed and they were a lot messier. I had seen any number of movies about the negative impacts of war in relation to Vietnam and none in regards to WWII. So when I finally saw The Best Years of Our Lives I was really surprised and impressed that a film took on the negative impacts of war, and so soon after what was collectively seen as a great victory.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-84602142898917398482014-01-12T21:15:59.304+02:002014-01-12T21:15:59.304+02:00Me too I was a bit worried going into this film, b...Me too I was a bit worried going into this film, but I was totally sold but it. At least until the ending came.
Among older films I agree there are few after-the-war films, but in the past 2-3 decades there have been quite a few with that theme, also good ones. I think it is in many ways more interestinng than the actual fighting. A curious related example is "Cast Away", which includes a lengthy section about coming back, something rarely seen before in robinsonades. Not sure that is actually a word in English...
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-48584047176259538222014-01-12T16:37:13.888+02:002014-01-12T16:37:13.888+02:00I like this movie, and what's more, I didn'...I like this movie, and what's more, I didn't think I would. It sounded a bit too schlocky for my tastes, but... it really isn't. I agree with you that the ending is a bit pat, but even so, as you say, they manage to do so much with it. There really aren't many "after the war" films out there. This is a good one, for sure.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.com
