This is...He he, I did read your review, so I know.
This is definitely a product of the forties, but it is not stuck in the forties. I would almost say this is what film noir would have looked like without the production code. It is amazing they let it through.TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-51683311578504265742014-03-01T08:22:46.637+02:002014-03-01T08:22:46.637+02:00I love Bogart, noir, Philip Marlowe, and Lauren Ba...I love Bogart, noir, Philip Marlowe, and Lauren Bacall. Any guess how I felt about this one?

I love how prurient this is, too. It seems so out of place in what people think of for the 1940s, but it's so good, and the prurience is enhanced (as you mention) by the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall. And, I agree that while Dick Powell was a fine Marlowe, you really can't go wrong with Bogart in the role.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-79070366568059700352014-02-28T11:32:05.069+02:002014-02-28T11:32:05.069+02:00I am convinced the opacity is intended. It is the ...I am convinced the opacity is intended. It is the mysterious mist that lends magic to the film. Marlowe is hardly better off than us and still he navigates these waters, accepts them even as he accepts Vivian.
It is curious that young Bacall gets to play the mature one of the daughters. I guess that sultry an actress had to play an adult character. Even then it is highly enjoyable. Lets see who first pick this film for the club, you or I.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-20353661252190538572014-02-28T02:33:33.399+02:002014-02-28T02:33:33.399+02:00Don't feel bad about not being able to follow ...Don't feel bad about not being able to follow everything. I think this is the one where even the author famously could not tie up all the threads when asked to do so. The most amazing thing in all of this is Bacall was only 19 years old when she made it. Nowadays she'd still be playing a teenager for several more years.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-18576591630404420262014-02-27T22:20:37.989+02:002014-02-27T22:20:37.989+02:00This was one of my first real big surprise finds o...This was one of my first real big surprise finds of the list, from before I even started my blog. The major thing to hit me was the script, which was so sharp and fast that I almost thought Aaron Sorkin had written it. I loved this film, and whenever TCM airs it I will try not to pass up on the opportunity. It's pretty high on my list of potential Club picks as well.Adolytsihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12266038228108057617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-37528419109872117232014-02-27T21:12:47.326+02:002014-02-27T21:12:47.326+02:00I think he was cooler and funnier than any James B...I think he was cooler and funnier than any James Bond I can think of. His Marlowe was the kind of guy you would want to be, especially with those girls around him.
I saw a biography of Bacall and Bogart narrated by Bacall herself much later. They were really a couple, also privately.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-31739211820654339502014-02-27T18:09:54.665+02:002014-02-27T18:09:54.665+02:00I love that Bogart gets to be a James Bond-esque b...I love that Bogart gets to be a James Bond-esque babe magnet in this movie! Everything else you said was spot on as well. Bogart and Bacall were one of the great screen (and real life) couples.marie_dresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334550550983418668noreply@blogger.com
