It...Well, it is not that contract I am thinking of. It is the contract of believability. As a viewer you have to buy the story otherwise it just does not matter. I good reason why spoof movies in general do not work. In the case of the Eagle we struggle to buy the story and in the end it finally collapses. It is not that we are getting a happy end, that is okay with me and probably better at the box office, it is the way it is done that is just too ridiculous.
On another note, while this film has comedic elements I think its foremost intension is to present a romance for women to like and what is better than dying in each others arms. It is sooo romantic and worked beautifully in Titanic. I think that more than a happy end is the success criteria for a Valentino film.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-57877130091640270052013-11-04T19:19:54.739+02:002013-11-04T19:19:54.739+02:00Sorry, but I have to disagree with you. Since the majority of people want and expect to see a happy ending to the film, having an unhappy ending would actually be "breaking the contract with the viewer."

For me there's nothing worse than taking the time to watch a modern day romantic comedy only to have the two people NOT end up together. The only reason to even watch a film like that is for the happy ending. Without it, the film is pointless. (Now, romantic dramas are a whole other thing.)Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-59403147879409380542013-11-04T09:21:58.091+02:002013-11-04T09:21:58.091+02:00That would be like them, no? Besides, what feeble reality was left in the movie is flushed out in those last scenes and that is sort of breaking the contract with the viewer. I know well those famous scenes from The Sheik and that alone would make it a more obvious choice. Audiences wanted and expected a happy ending in these kinds of films, especially in this period.

I haven't seen The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but I've seen the iconic role of The Sheik. Like Harold Lloyd's iconic film Safety Last not getting picked I guess the editors are just trying to make us think that they are true film buffs by NOT picking those expected films.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2746502363551524682.post-43053119216339081752013-11-03T22:05:11.287+02:002013-11-03T22:05:11.287+02:00I'd have gone with The Four Horsemen of the Ap...I'd have gone with The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse despite it being very melodramatic and long. One wonders if "The Eagle" is better than "The Sheik", which is a more famous film. This does not bode well!marie_dresslerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06334550550983418668noreply@blogger.com
